Questions Parents Ask

Scratch is a free, visual programming language built by MIT that lets kids code by dragging and dropping colourful blocks instead of typing text. It removes the syntax errors and typing barriers that trip up young beginners, so your child can focus on logic, sequencing, and creativity from their very first class.
This course is designed for children in Grade 1 to 4, roughly age 6 to 10. Younger children who are comfortable using a mouse and reading simple instructions generally do well with Scratch, and it works equally well as a first course for slightly older beginners who are new to programming.
The full course runs 15 weeks, with 3 classes a week at 60 minutes each, 45 classes in total. The first 5 weeks cover the core Scratch blocks one group at a time, and the remaining 10 weeks are spent building 12 real games and a final independent project.
Your child does not need strong reading or typing skills to start this course. Scratch uses icons, colours, and simple drag and drop blocks, so pre-readers and early readers can follow along with instructor support, and there is no typing involved in building a project.
Your child builds a real, playable project for almost every class, including a Bounce Game, a Catching Game, an Alien Invasion Shooter, and a Quiz Game, twelve projects in total, plus a final project your child designs independently. Nothing is copied from a tutorial; every project is built live during the session.
After finishing Scratch, most students move directly into YCA's Python Foundation Course, where the same logical thinking and sequencing skills carry over into real text-based code. Scratch is designed as a launchpad, not a standalone skill, so your child leaves ready for the next step.
